Youth 4 Youth

Youth for Youth is a project powered by youth for youth following a Consultancy assignment for Jacobs Douwe Egberts (JDE), the world's leading pure-play coffee and tea company, based in The Netherlands.

Our first assignment for JDE was to document the sustainability progress and issues that exist within Uganda's coffee supply chain. This resulted in a documentary where we interviewed more than 50 stakeholders to understand all aspects of the coffee value chain. Since then, Marula and JDE decided to focus on two key issues that stood out to us. We believe that solving these is a priority to ensure the sustainability of the coffee and agriculture sector of Uganda:

  • The high youth unemployment rate in Uganda

  • The low youth engagement in the agriculture industry

Marula's vision with Youth for Youth is to integrate the youth into agriculture.

WE ARE "FOR THE YOUTH BY THE YOUTH".

Together with our partners Proteen and MARA Agribusiness we launched Youth for Youth to decrease the youth unemployment rate in Uganda in the agriculture supply chain, often due to the mismatch between the theoretical educational system and the practical job market, through job creation.

MARA Agribusiness intends to create 2500 direct decent jobs for rural youth in the coffee value chain in Uganda by 2025 through supplying genuine, accessible and affordable agro-inputs to coffee farmers, processing and trading in high-quality sustainable and traceable coffee.

Proteen transforms organic waste into sustainable feed and fertilizer through the incredible processing of black soldier flies. The project has allowed them to expand their warehouse in Kampala where they have trained and employed over 20 local youth to revolutionise the local agricultural sector. The employed youth expect to supply 100 farmers by the end of 2020 and 800 by the end of 2021, offering them an affordable, high-quality and sustainable organic fertilizer. This pilot has then enabled them to bring this technology to rural areas where they will train and employ over 2000 youth through the Challenge Fund Project

Through this project Marula also partnered with Agripreneurship Alliance, SLU and several universities in Uganda to train young people in Entrepreneurship in Agribusiness to help them create their own businesses to generate income and employment. We particularly support young women and social enterprises.

As Project lead, we are responsible for the project management with the client Jacobs Douwe Egberts (JDE), and as well for the communication through our creative services and the Monitoring & Evaluation of the project.
